FabricAir in aid to create an “Ice Cube” for upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing

Having good air distribution is extremely important no matter the building. But it is even more important in the sports centers, where the best world athletes compete for awards. Beijing, China, will host the Winter Olympics in 2022 and they decided to retransform their National Aquatics Center, better known as the “water cube”, to host winter events. Soon enough, the building will be known as the “Ice Cube” and all the curling activities will take place there. Therefore, National Aquatics Center chose FabricAir, a leading air distribution solution provider, to design a state-of-the-art air distribution system that would meet the highest quality standards of the International Olympic Committee.

FabricAir received a request for an air distribution system that would stabilize the ice surface temperature at -8.5℃. In addition, it has to remove any humidity above the ice surface which would affect the quality of live broadcasting, as required by the Organizing Committee.

To keep the ice from melting from the higher temperatures coming from the spectators on either side of the rink, the heat needed to be separated by cool, dry air. However, the wind speed must be controlled below 0.5m/s. Excessive wind speed can affect the ice surface around the competition area. For this reason, FabricAir engineers designed a fabric ducting system with micro-perforations, through which air is sent into the cavity. The cavity length is 5.3m, and the air passes through the cavity and then goes out to the ground to form a barrier to insulate hot air. The initial velocity of the fabric duct is 0.35m/s, and the exit velocity of the ground cavity is 0.44m/s.

In addition, FabricAir prepared a CFD simulation for the customer in the early stage of the project. FabricAir CFD Service is the computational fluid dynamics program designed specifically for fabric ducting. Software program confirms a commercial ventilation design’s airflow patterns, temperature distribution, and velocities; or identifies potentially inaccurate performance issues before factory fabrication and site installation. The software also calculates the flow patterns, pressure loss, air velocity, temperature, and other invaluable parameters affecting a space’s ventilation design.
